Boyd, Bubes win pro-am championship

DENTON -- The Woodmont Country Club pairing of professional Bob Boyd and amateur Ron Bubes thrives on pressure.

Standing on the 16th tee at Caroline CC yesterday, the pair was 6 under par and knew the leading team was at 7-under. So Bubes holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the 16th, and Boyd rolled in a downhill 12-foot birdie putt at the 17th.

A routine par at the 18th left them at 8-under 32-3264 and brought them the championship of the 34th men's pro-amateur championship of the Maryland State Golf Association.

Playing in the fourth group from the end among 39 groups (77 teams), they unseated the early leaders, Kevin Taylor and Todd Pratt of Glenn Dale Golf Club, 32-3365.

Boyd's credentials include a National Club Pro title, two-time Carolinas PGA player of the year, and a record-smashing triumph in last year's Maryland Open. Bubes just won his fourth Woodmont club championship, but had to go 43 holes to unseat defender Mike Hillman.

The winners, seeing the 6,543-yard Eastern Shore course for the first time, had eight birdies, six of them by Boyd. Included in his collection were putts of 30 feet at the 12th and 20 feet at the 15th. Bubes got the team going with a 15-foot birdie putt at the second hole and they ended with four birdies on each side.

The Taylor-Pratt entry, the youngest in the field at 21 and 20, respectively, also had eight birdies (six by Taylor), but marred the card with a bogey at the 13th.

Jimmy Hyams, assistant pro at Woodholme CC, had the first hole-in-one of his career, hitting a 7-iron shot at the 153-yard ninth.

Two notable scores were posted by professionals, as Wheeler Stewart of Oakland CC shot 67 on his own ball, and Glenn Dale assistant Brian Lehnhard had a 68.
