* Marine Pfc. Chad M. Austin, son of Arthur S. and Laura Austin of Manchester, has completed the Basic Assault Amphibian Crewman's Course.
The seven-week skill training with Schools Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif., prepared him for assignment to a Marine assault amphibian unit. Assault amphibian vehicles are used to transport troops and supplies both from ship to beachhead during subsequent operations ashore.
He received instruction on the vehicles capabilities and operating characteristics; participated in land and water driving exercises; and studied operator-level maintenance procedures.
A 1990 graduateof North Carroll High School, he joined the Marine Corps in August 1990.
* Navy Seaman Recruit Alan Goff, son of Virgil R. and BarbaraL. Goff of Finksburg, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, San Diego, Calif.
During his eight-week training cycle, he studied general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in the Navy.
His studies included seamanship, close order drill, Naval history and first aid. Personnel who complete this course are eligible for three hours of college credit.
Goff is a 1989 graduate of Westminster High School.
* Marine Lance Cpl. David M. Umbel recently reported for duty at Marine Corps Air Station New River, Jacksonville, N.C.
The son of John C. and Mary A. Umbel of Taneytown, he is a 1987 graduate of Catoctin High School, Thurmont, Frederick County.
