NBC adds Proctor to NFL booth

NBC Sports has hired three former players as new analysts and two new play-by-play announcers for its NFL telecasts. Mel Proctor, voice of the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Bullets on Home Team Sports, is one of the play-by-play announcers. The other is Kevin Harlan, Minnesota Timberwolves announcer.

The three new analysts will be former Chicago Bears defensive end Dan Hampton, former Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster and former New York Giants defensive back Beasley Reece.

* 49ERS: Concerns over Bubba Paris' weight and conditioning have combined to sideline the offensive tackle.

"He's not going to get on the field until he's where we think he has to be conditioning-wise and health-wise," coach George Seifert said.

Paris ended a three-day holdout Tuesday, signing a one-year contract and reporting at 327 pounds, 2 over a weight limitation established by Seifert.

But he was held out of practice on Wednesday on the advice of doctors who became concerned over the results of some medical tests administered Tuesday.

* CARDINALS: Defensive tackle Bob Clasby retired, saying he wanted to leave the NFL while he could still walk.
