Figures from 1989 indicate that Sojourner-Douglass College in East Baltimore continues to be listed by the U.S. Department of Education as an institution with high student loan default rates, according to a list released by the department yesterday.
The private college, at 500 N. Caroline St., had its federal student loan and grant programs terminated last summer after President Charles W. Simmons failed to answer an inspector general subpoena for 50 student transcripts.
The college appealed the termination order and a hearing was held Feb. 20 in Washington. A written decision is expected later this summer. Simmons did not return a phone call for comment.
The Ron Thomas School of Cosmetology, 5600 block of Bowleys Lane; the Eldorado Academy of Cosmetology on Eastern Avenue; Strayer Business College on Light Street and the Potomac Academy of Hair Design in Lanham also were listed yesterday as possible targets for student loan and grant termination orders based on high default rates from 1989.
