Gibbs says steroid problem is over

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Coach Joe Gibbs of the Washington Redskins said yesterday that the NFL's steroid problem is over, but said that in the past at least one player may have told him after retiring that he had used steroids.

Gibbs said he thinks that testing has solved the problem, even though Lyle Alzado, who says that steroid use caused his brain cancer, said recently that steroid use still is rampant in the NFL.

"The use of steroids is over in this sport," Gibbs said. "I know Alzado said that. I think that's impossible myself. I don't know how they would do that. We're testing them, and steroids is something that shows up for a long period of time in your body. I don't honestly believe that we have anybody on steroids, and if they did, they're going to get caught because they're going to be tested here in another week or two."

Gibbs there was steroid use on the team in the past.

"As far as guys in the past, I think we had some suspicions maybe on a few guys, but I really didn't know outright. I may have had one or two guys that told me after they quit taking them. I think maybe one -- he told me he was on steroids after he quit playing. At the time I really didn't think that was a rampant thing. In those days, nobody thought a lot about it. I think all of a sudden everybody became aware of it. I think everybody pretty much got off of them."

Former Redskin Dexter Manley said last week that some players on the team used steroids in the past.

"I think you're going to get that on about every team. Somebody's going to say that. Right now, I don't think anybody on the Redskins is on steroids," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said players wouldn't risk using them now.

"You're going to try a masking agent or something and try to beat steroids and get caught and get kicked out. It doesn't make sense. You're not going to run the risk of that," he said.
