THERE IS SOMETHING MYSTERIOUS ABOUT HAVING AN ENORMOUS OLD door open as you approach it from the street. Something mysterious but pleasant, once you realize there is a person on the other side inviting you in. Doormen seem to be a vanishing breed in this age of cost-cutting and no-frills service. I was interested in documenting some of these helping hands before they completely disappear. As I sought them out, I discovered other types of doormen. Doormen who monitor access to private clubs and restricted places. You can get a pretty good idea of what to expect of a place by the type of reception you get at the entrance. The doorman can serve as a barrier or a one-person welcoming committee. These are some of the people manning the doors of Baltimore.
