Getting historic scoop on Furnace Town's past

Dig into Furnace Town's past at the historic village's annual summer archaeology program. Public archaeological digs on the site of the 19th century iron furnace are scheduled for the afternoons of July 17, 19, 25 and 27 and Aug. 2, 14 and 22.

Volunteers are invited to take part under the direction of Sue Conner, a Salisbury State University grad who has participated in digs in the Middle East and who interned at Furnace Town last spring. Those wishing to participate should bring gloves, a 1-inch paintbrush and a small (preferably mason's) trowel.

Participation is included in the price of admission to Furnace Town, which is $2 for adults and $1 for children. Registration is necessary. Call 632-2032.

Take a whirl under stars at Snow Hill outdoor dance

The Snow Hill C.B. Association will present the first in a series of outdoor summer dances Friday from 8 p.m. to midnight at Sturgis Park on the banks of the Pocomoke River in Snow Hill. The first dance will feature the local band Borderline, which plays Top 40 music.

Tickets are $6 per person. A cash bar at the event benefits the Snow Hill Rotary Club. In the event of rain, the dance will move to the town fire hall on Green Street.

The association also plans dancing under the stars on Aug. 9 and 23, Sept. 13 and Oct. 11. For more information, call the Snow Hill Chamber of Commerce at 632-0809.

Try your hand at painting

The Art League of Ocean City will present three landscape painting classes, conducted by Peter Schulz. The sessions are scheduled for July 17-19, July 24-26 and July 31-Aug. 2. Each class meets from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Beginners and experienced painters will learn drawing, mixing oil paints, choosing a subject, underpainting and finishing. Mr. Schulz studied at the Art Students League in New York.

The class costs $50 and registration is required. Call 289-8814.
