PICK OF THE WEEK: Big band music isn't as common as it was in World War II, but it still has its followers.
Every Wednesday through Sunday, 9 p.m. until 1:30 a.m., Lou Voir plays big band music on the piano and keyboard synthesizer at the Sandbar Lounge, 33rd Street and Coastal Highway.
"People like that kind of music. It's relaxing and exciting to dance to," said Mr. Voir, an Ocean Pines resident.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, when Mr. Voir isn't performing, the Bruce Willey Band plays country ballads and music from the '50s the Sandbar.
GOOD SHOW: Singer Ray Charles, who was in town July 3, brought the audience at the Convention Center to its feet when he walked on stage and bowed. He kept fans applauding at such favorite songs as "Georgia On My Mind" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." Although his hair has turned gray, he looked trim and his voice was strong and enthusiastic as he performed for more than an hour.
UPCOMING CONCERTS: Shows planned at the Convention Center this summer include: Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick, Wednesday, $25; comedian Jay Leno, July 31, $17.50; country singer Garth Brooks, Aug. 7, $18.50 and $21.50; and Kenny Rogers, Aug. 14, $23.50. Shows are at 8 p.m., except for Mr. Rogers, who will have two shows at 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Call 289-8314.
