Martha Ott Pulliam, 100, grandmother of Vice President Dan Quayle and a former newspaper publisher, died Thursday in Franklin, Ind. Mr. Quayle, who in his 1988 debate with Democratic vice-presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen said his grandmother helped shape his political philosophy, called her "the matriarch of our family." Mrs. Pulliam was a librarian in Franklin. In 1919, she married Eugene C. Pulliam, founder of Central Newspapers Inc. and publisher of newspapers in Indianapolis, Muncie and Vincennes and in Phoenix. The couple, whose two daughters include Mr. Quayle's mother, divorced in 1940. Mrs. Pulliam was publisher of the (Lebanon) Reporter from the early 1940s until December.
