Wilmer Institute sets up annual Michels lecture

The Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital has set up an annual Ronald G. Michels Memorial Lectureship as a tribute to the former Wilmer vitreoretinal surgeon who died in January of heart problems at 47.

Dr. Stephen J. Ryan, chairman at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and friend of Michels, is to give the first lecture Dec. 13.

The institute said it also will award an annual $500 Ronald G. Michels Resident research grant to a Wilmer resident. A fund has been organized at the institute to finance the awards.

Alice Michels, Michels' widow, described the Wilmer lecture as "an appropriate tribute which Ron would have approved of and appreciated."

Michels, who was associated with the Retina Center at St. Joseph Hospital at his death, was a world-renowned surgeon, scientist, teacher and author considered by many retinal surgeons to be without peer.
