Body of man, 29, pulled from river VHC ZdB

The body of a New Carrollton, Prince George's County, man, who jumped into the Rhode River Saturday afternoon in an attempt to rescue members of his family after the boat they were in was swamped by waves, was pulled from the river yesterday morning.

State Natural Resources Police said the body of Michael V. Caldwell Sr., 29, was found shortly after 10 a.m. not far from where he was seen jumping into the river to rescue family members after their 17-foot power boat sank after when the wake of a passing boat caused it to fill with water and sink.

The accident occurred about 4 p.m. Saturday when Caldwell, his wife and six other family members were boating on the river.

Police said two large waves created by a passing boat struck the Caldwell boat broadside, causing it to fill up with water and go under.

Police said Caldwell had rescued one of his children, a sister and a nephew and was standing on another boat when he was seen entering the water, which was 12- to 15 feet deep.

When he didn't resurface, rescue and recovery units were sent to the scene.
