Woman, 66, killed in crash on Route 5
A Prince George's County resident was killed yesterday afternoon and six other people were injured when a car and van crashed on Route 5 in Forestville, Prince George's County.
Investigators said the accident occurred at 3:55 p.m. when a Dodge Aspen station wagon turned left onto Old Alexandria Road and was was hit broadside by a Ford Econoline van traveling north on Route 5.
The van had the green light and there was a flashing red signal in the left turn lane, police said.
A passenger in the Dodge, 66-year-old Gladys Virginia Tucker of New Carrollton, was killed instantly. The driver of the Dodge, James Earl Fowler, 61, of Nova Avenue in Capital Heights, was listed in serious condition at Southern Maryland Hospital in Prince George's County, where preparations were being made to fly him to Georgetown University Hospital in Washington.
The driver of the Ford van, Daniel Carey Smith, 36, of North Garfield Street in Sterling, Va., and three of his sons were taken to Southern Maryland Hospital, where they were later released. A fourth son, Daniel Smith Jr., 11, was flown by medevac helicopter to Children's Hospital in Washington, where he was listed in stable condition last night.
Propane leak forces residents to leave area
State Police evacuated nearby residents for 3 1/2 hours yesterday after a propane gas tank leak was discovered at the Vihlman Brick Yards near Mount Savage in Allegany County.
Police said surrounding roads were blocked after the leak was discovered about 3:30 p.m.
A tanker truck from Tri-State Oxygen was called to the scene to unload the leaking tank, police said.
Unloading continued until about 7 p.m., when residents were allowed to return to their homes.
Huntingtown man shot in woods near Chaptico
ST. MARY'S COUNTY
A Calvert County man was found fatally shot yesterday in woods near Chaptico after a telephone call from a woman in Prince George's County to state police in Waldorf. A police investigation led to the arrest of the woman's sister and brother-in-law.
James Thomas Joyce, 46, and his wife, Nancy Pauline Thacker, 47, both of the 4800 block of Briscoe Road in St. Leonard, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon and assault and battery in connection with the death of 43-year-old Calvin Leon Brady Jr., a resident of the 2600 block of Glenn Court in Huntingtown.
About 9 a.m. yesterday, state police said, the woman caller told them her sister was with her husband in the town of Avenue in St. Mary's County, that a slaying had occurred and that the caller's sister was trying to get away from her husband.
State troopers in Leonardtown who were alerted found the husband and wife in a car on Route 238 in Chaptico. Meanwhile, troopers from Prince Frederick went to the couple's home in St. Leonard looking for evidence of a homicide.
Further investigation led the police to the woods where Mr. Brady's body was found. They said he had apparently died of a head wound. An autopsy was scheduled.
