An arsonist attempted to burn down a Chinese restaurant in Columbia on Monday night, county police and fire officials said.

Between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m., someone smashed the front plate-glass window of the Hunan Manor restaurant in the 7000 block of Deepage Drive and poured gasoline over furniture inside, police said.

The gasoline was ignited, causing an unknown amount of damage, police said.

The owner of the restaurant returned the next day to discover the vandalism.

Policesaid they recovered a metal pipe at the scene that was apparently used to smash the window.

The prowler slipped through the shards of broken glass by putting a piece of cardboard over the window frame, police said.

No one was in the building when the fire was set, police said.

The state Fire Marshal's office has ruled the fire an arson and is investigating the incident. Police said they have no suspects.
