Tougher laws?

The Supreme Court's ruling that states may impose prison terms of life without parole on first-time offenders convicted of possessing large amounts of drugs drew overwhelming approval from callers to SUNDIAL. Of 462 callers, 372, or 80 percent, agreed with the court's stand, and 90 callers disagreed.

The result again was 80 percent favorable (376 callers out of 466) to the proposition that Maryland, which can give up to 40 years without parole in drug cases, should have a tougher sentencing law. Ninety callers said Maryland should not have a tougher law.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as a scientific public opinion poll would be.
