The following area servicemen recently returned from deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Storm:

* Navy Dentalman Apprentice Edward J. Davis, a 1990 graduate of Laurel High School, served aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Raleigh, homeportedin Norfolk, Va.

* Marine Lance Cpl. Frank W. Buchanan, son of Raymond E. and Catherine B. Buchanan of Glen Burnie, served with the Assault Amphibian Battalion, Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is a 1988 graduate of Glen Burnie High School.

* Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Cecil G. Hairiston, whose wife, Latanya, is the daughter of Ronald andPatricia Ward of Severna Park, served aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea, homeported in Mayport, Fla.

* Navy Lt. Paul C. Jenkins, a 1985 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, served aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

* Navy Ensign Alan J. Mail, son of Alan D. Mail and Judith Rowton of Severna Park, served aboard the tank landing ship USS Spartanburg, homeported in Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Va. He is a 1985 graduate of Severna Park High School.

* Navy Lt. Robert H. Turman, whose wife, Carol, is the daughter of Wilma Beahm of Millersville, served aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

* Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Ronald K. Smallman, son of retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. and Mrs. Jack Smallman of Annapolis, servedwith Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron -- 126, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va. He is a 1975 graduate of Severna Park Highs School and a 1979 graduate of Towson State University.

* Marine Sgt. DavidA. Freyman, whose wife, Debbie, is the daughter of Dale F. and Rannell Brigman of Arnold, served with the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

* Navy Seaman Recruit Phaon R. Carr, son of Sherl E. and Dorothy R. Carr of Gambrills, served aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, homeported in Norfolk, Va. He is a 1990 graduate of Arundel High School.

* Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew A. Woods, a 1986 graduate of Chesapeake High School, served aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea, homeported in Mayport, Fla.

* Navy Lt. Layton F. Clay, son of retired Navy Capt. and Mrs. Harold S. ClaySr. of Severna Park, served with Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron -- 137, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Wash. He is a1981 graduate of Severna Park High School and a 1985 graduate of theU.S. Naval Academy.

LITTELL EARNS BADGE

Sgt. Brian J. Littell hasbeen awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Army's highest non-combat proficiency award for infantryman.

Seventeen infantry skills are covered in the testing, including rifle marksmanship , hand grenades, anti-tank weapons, first aid, military intelligence and signal communications. A 12-mile road march with full combat gear completes the test.

Littell is an infantryman at Fort Richardson, Alaska.

He is the son of Bertha M. Littell of Glen Burnie.

The sergeant isa 1981 graduate of Brooklyn Park High School.

WILLIAMS IS SPECIALIST

Airman Anthony T. Williams Jr. has graduated from the pavements maintenance specialist course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas.

Williams is the son of Mildred Williams of San Antonio, Texas, and Anthony T. Williams Sr. of Severn.

He is a 1990 graduate of Meade Senior High School.

FAULK FINISHES COURSE

Pvt. Eric M. Faulk has graduated from the utilities equipment repairer course at Fort Belvoir, Va.

He is the son of Mike W. Faulk of Dublin, Ohio, and Chris A. Faulk of Severn.

The private is a 1990 graduate of Dublin High School.

RAMG COMPLETES COURSE

Private James L. Ramg Jr. has completed the electronic warfare signal intelligence non-communications interceptor course at Fort Devens, Ayer, Mass.

He is the sonof James L. and Janice L. Ramg of Hanover and a 1990 graduate of Meade Senior High School.

ALBRECHT GRADUATES

Air Force Reserve Capt. Heidi L. Albrecht has graduated from the flight nurse course at the School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

She is the daughter of Joan F. Obitz of Crownsville.

The captain is a 1980 graduate of Old Mill High School and a 1984 graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

PHOTO CONTEST OPENS

The U.S. Naval Institute and Eastman Kodak Co. have announced that entriesare being accepted for the 30th annual Naval and Maritime Photo Contest. Kodak's co-sponsorship, now in its sixth year, has enabled the Naval Institute to award more and larger prizes and publish the photographs in Proceedings, the monthly magazine of the Naval Institute.

The contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers. Cash prizes of $500, $350 and $250 will be awarded to the photographers of the top three entries. In addition, 15 Honorable Mention winners will each receive $100.

All photos submitted for the contest must pertain to a naval or maritime subject and may be either black and white prints, color prints, or color transparencies. Entries must include a caption and the photographer's name, social security number and address printed or typed on a separate sheet of paper. The minimum acceptable print size is 5 by 7 inches. The minimum acceptable transparency size is 35 millimeters. Photos are not limited to those taken during this calendar year. However, there is a limit of five entries per person.

Entries must be received on or before Dec. 31, 1991. The winning photos will be published in a 1992 issue of Proceedings. Photographs not awarded prizes may be purchased by the Naval Institute. Photos will not be returned unless accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope.

All entries should be mailed to: Naval and Maritime Photo Contest, U.S. Naval Institute, Annapolis, Md. 21402.

CERTIFICATES FOR VETERANS

In honor of those who served in Operation Desert Storm, the U.S. Naval Institute has introduced a new Gulf War certificate.

The certificate was designed by artist Tom Freeman and depicts images from all services participating in the Gulf War. The certificate can be custom-lettered with the person's name, unit and dates of service.

According to Jim Barber, executive director of the Naval Institute, this certificate is a tribute to those who participated in the war.

The Naval Institute has also introduced certificates honoring veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other military deployments.

To cover production costs, the non-profit Naval Institute is making these certificates available for a nominal charge. Regular certificates are available for $3.20 (plus postage) for members of the Naval Institute, and $4 (plus postage and handling) for non-members. Custom-lettered certificates are available for $6 (plus postage) for members, and $7.50 (plus postage and handling) for non-members. Quantity discounts are available for orders of 25 or more. JOINTHE PARADE

In cooperation with the Greater Annapolis Chamber of Commerce, the city of Annapolis is seeking Annapolis and county area Gulf War veterans who are willing to participate in the Fourth of Julyparade.

In response to President Bush's call for a nationwide "welcome home" celebration for those who participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, the city has planned a parade to precede the annual waterfront fireworks display over Annapolis Harbor.

The parade will begin at approximately 6 p.m. from St. John's Street and proceed along College Avenue, Church Circle, Main Street, Randall Street,King George Street and the perimeter of the U.S. Naval Academy.

In addition to the names and telephone numbers of "Desert Stormers," the Annapolis Parade Committee also is looking for marching units, drum and bugle corps, bands of all kinds, antique vehicles, floats and any other individuals or groups interested in being part of this family-oriented, old-fashioned patriotic community parade.

ZUKOWSKI IS USNA GRAD

Navy Ensign John J. Zukowski, son of William J. and Eleanor G. Zukowski of Arnold, recently graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned in his present rank in the U.S. Navy.

The 1991 Naval Academy graduate completed four years of intensive academic, physical and professional training which culminated with a bachelor's degree in general science.

He is a 1985 graduate of Mount Saint Joseph High School.

ASCIONE GRADUATES

Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Gail C. Ascione, daughter of Thelma A. Cole of Millersville, recently graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy at the Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, R.I.

While attending the nine-week course Ascione was able to prepare for future leadership and management responsibilities in the Navy.

A 1972 graduate of Glen Burnie High School, and a 1976 graduate of Frostburg State College with a bachelor's degree, she joined the Navy in November 1977.

OLIENYK REPAIRS COPTERS

Army National Guard Private First ClassPatrick A. Olienyk has completed the observation/scout (OH-58) helicopter repair course at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala.

Instruction involved study through classroom and on training including the OH-58's turbine engine, transmission, electrical systems, flight controls, main and tail rotor systems, and hydraulic systems.

He is the son ofMichael D. and Margaret K. Olienyk of Crownsville.

The private isa 1987 graduate of Meade Senior High School.

BROOKS IS MECHANIC

Marine Private Jayson L. Brooks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert L. Brooksof Glen Burnie, recently completed the Basic Engineer Equipment Mechanic Course.

During the course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C., Brooks received instruction on the electrical, mechanical and hydraulic principles employed in the operation and maintenance of engineer equipment.

He is a 1990 graduate of Andover High School.

KESLER IS CAPTAIN

Susan R. Kesler has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of captain.

She is chief of communications operations at Hurlburt Field, Fla.

Kesler is the daughter of Douglas R. and Lucile M. Kesler of Pasadena.

The captain is a 1983 graduate of Chesapeake High School. She received a bachelor's degree in 1987 from the U.S. Air Force Academy, ColoradoSprings, Colo.

PASCALL DECORATED

Pvt. 1st Class Lonnie M. PascallJr. has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal that is awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage, or other outstanding accomplishments.

He is a fighting vehicle system mechanicat Ledward Barracks, Schweinfurt, Germany.

Pascall is the son of Lonnie M. and Francis I. Pascall of Pasadena.

SGT. MARKS PROMOTED

Keith A. Marks has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank ofsergeant.

Marks is a plumbing specialist at RAF Bentwaters, England.

He is the son of Drema J. and Robert A. Marks of Severna Park.

The sergeant is a 1984 graduate of Severna Park High School.

LOWEGIVEN COMMAND

Army Capt. John M. Lowe has assumed command of the 6th Combat Equipment Company at Miesau Army Depot, Germany.

Lowe is the son of retired Army Col. John W. Lowe of Davidsonville and Barbara E. Waldron of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.

He is a 1979 graduateof Annapolis Senior High School, and a 1984 graduate of Cambell University, Buies Creek, N.C.

LEIGHTON DECORATED

Specialist Thomas B. Leighton has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal that is awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage, or otheroutstanding accomplishments.

Leighton is a graves registration specialist in Seoul, South Korea.

He is the son of Thomas L. and JoAnne Leighton of Edgewater.

The specialist is a 1976 graduate of Southern Senior High School.

HOWARD FIXES HELICOPTERS

Army Reserve Sergeant William W. Howard has completed a utility (UH-1) helicopter repair course at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala.

The course was designed to provide enlisted personnel with a working knowledge in organizational, direct and general support maintenance on the UH-1 helicopter. Personnel were trained in the duties of crew chief and record keeper.

He is the son of William L. Howard Jr. of Pasadena.
