A Calvert County man was killed early yesterday when he fell asleep at the wheel of his pickup truck and drove into a tree, state police said.

Charles Edward Phipps Jr., 18, of North Beach was driving a 1990 Dodge pickup eastbound on Fifth Street at Ridgeview Drive in Owings at 4:50 a.m. when he apparently fell asleep as he came to a curve in the road, said Sgt. Eric Briggs of the Prince Frederick barracks.

The truck continued in a straight line, driving off the road and into a tree. There was no evidence of any alcohol or drug use, Sergeant Briggs said.
