South Carroll student drowns at reservoir Honor student, 18, was swimming with friends.

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

An 18-year-old honor roll student at South Carroll High School drowned last night while swimming with several friends in the Liberty Dam reservoir, State Police said.

Trooper David Jones of the Westminster Barracks said the victim, Paul Sumpter Marcum of the 800 block of N. Main St. in Mount Airy, was swimming in the water under the Md. 32 bridge near Sykesville when he went under. Marcum's body was recovered early today from the reservoir.

When Marcum's friends missed him, they got into a car and drove until they found Jones at a traffic stop about eight miles from the reservoir.

At 12:45 a.m., divers found the body about 50 yards from the shore.

Police say the spot is a popular, but illegal, one for swimming and partying.

No charges have been filed against the two females and three males who were swimming with Marcum, police said today.
