Wimbledon rain hits early, hard

LONDON -- Typical Wimbledon weather -- a cold rain -- delayed the start of play today and was expected to plague the tournament for several days.

The London Weather Center forecast wet conditions throughout the day and heavy rain tomorrow morning. Periods of rain were expected through Thursday.

In a strange twist that seemed eerily appropriate on the miserable opening day, a funeral cortege led by a solitary bagpiper passed along the street outside Wimbledon just at the time that play had been scheduled to begin.

The tournament lost another player before a single ball was hit. Mats Wilander of Sweden pulled out because of a knee injury. Martin Laurendeau replaced him of Canada.
