* If the electricity goes out, do not open the freezer door unless absolutely necessary, and then only for the shortest time possible.
A full or nearly full freezer will preserve food for about 10 hours if the door isn't opened.
* Fifty pounds of dry ice, placed in freezer soon after power failure, will prevent thawing for two to three days if door is kept closed.
* The fuller your freezer, the less chance food will thaw.
* Check contents for damage after power is restored.
