Braniff International Airlines, the successor to Braniff Inc., the bankrupt carrier that suspended operations in November 1989, said yesterday that it would start service on four routes July 1.
Its introductory fares, effective through July 15 without restrictions, include a $69 one-way coach fare from Islip MacArthur Airport on New York's Long Island to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and a $79 fare between Dallas and Newark and Dallas and Los Angeles.
The carrier, which has been operating charter flights, primarily for tour operators, since December, has its headquarters at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
Braniff's leased fleet will consistof five Boeing 727s and three McDonnell-Douglas DC-9s. Braniff also said that it had hired a staff of 300, mostly former employees of Braniff Inc., which had almost 5,000 workers.
Braniff Inc. sought Chapter 11 protection in September 1989 and suspended flights two months later. It carried only 4.3 million passengers in 1988, less than 1 percent of the domestic airline market, and lost $46 million in the first six months of 1989.
In April 1990, a bankruptcy court approved the transfer of Braniff Inc.'s operating certificate and trade name for $313,000 to BN Air Inc., a company owned by Jeffrey Chodorow. He said yesterday that he had hired "probably seven or eight" ex-Braniff Inc. managers.
