200 workers will help turn vacant houses into low-income homes

Peoples Homesteading Group Inc. More than 200 volunteers will raise funds while helping low-income Baltimore families turn vacant, unused houses into homes at a workathon beginning with a ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday at 1109 McDonogh St. in East Baltimore. Volunteers get pledges for the eight hours they will work to benefit PHG and people in El Salvador and South Africa. For details: 889-0071.

Saint Vincent's Center, Child and Family Care, on Pots Spring Road in Timonium needs volunteers in many areas there and also at the Chara House, (pronounced Ka-rah, it is Greek for joy) which is located in northwest Baltimore and is a group home for infants and toddlers with AIDS. Maryland School for the Blind wants volunteers for many school programs, aides to drivers and clerical assistants. Call John Scarborough, 444-5000.

Pikesville Senior Center Home Team Program needs volunteers who will help handicapped or homebound older people remain independent in the community. Call 887-1245 for details.

Junior League of Baltimore awarded 12 non-profits its 1990-91 Community Assistance Fund Grants on June 12. A total of $17,800 went to recipients in areas of literacy, women, elderly and youth at risk. For details call, 467-0260.

Good Samaritan Hospital wants volunteers who have some library experience and typing skills to help in the medical library.

Fellowship of Lights offers shelter and counseling to homeless teen-agers. Those who would like to volunteer or those who need the assistance should call 385-1200.
