Martinez already has nine wins

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

Major league notebook:

Former Oriole Dennis Martinez captured his ninth victory for Montreal over the weekend. Last year, he didn't win his ninth until Aug. 14. . . Detroit called up outfielder Skeeter Barnes to replace Pete Incaviglia (DL). Barnes hadn't hit a homer in the majors in four years, but he hit two in three days at Seattle. . . Ex-Bird Curt Schilling is tied with Al Osuna in leading the Houston Astros in saves (5). . . Cincinnati lost maybe the best prospect in its organization, first baseman Reggie Jefferson, to a waiver foul-up. Jefferson winds up with Cleveland, where he'll play soonest. . . There have been five winning streaks of at least seven games this year. Four of them belong to AL West teams: Oakland, Seattle, Texas and Minnesota.
