Leroy Burrell, watch out

Darrell Green of the Washington Redskins gets his chance to prove today that he's still the NFL's fastest man.

Green will compete with seven other players in the sixth DHL/NFL's Fastest Man Contest in Palm Desert, Calif.

A winner the three times he's competed in the contest, in 1986, 1988 and 1989, Green will face Mel Gray in his first 60-yard heat. The winner will meet the winner of the Sam Graddy-James Williams heat.

That winner will go against the winner of the other bracket, which includes Ron Brown, the defending champion who'll face Herschel Walker in his first round. Anthony Miller, the No. 3 seed, goes against Tony Jones in the other heat in that bracket.

Green, 31, said he doesn't think he's slowing down.

"I expect to run this fast the next five years," Green said. "I haven't even run as fast as I can run."

The competition will be televised by NBC on July 28.

The quote

Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine, who was drafted in the fourth round by the NHL's Los Angeles Kings in 1984: "I don't think the Kings would want me now. If they signed me as a center, they'd have to move Wayne Gretzky to left wing."
