Cosell doing well after cancer surgery

Broadcaster Howard Cosell is doing well after removal of a cancerous tumor from his chest earlier in the week, according to his boss at ABC Radio.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he came back to work on Monday," said Shelby Whitfield, sports director of ABC Radio.

Cosell, 73, underwent a three-hour operation Monday in New York.


The International Olympic Committee agreed to reconsider changes in the modern pentathlon and three-day equestrian events for the 1996 Games.

The IOC had planned to eliminate the team events in those sports because they allow athletes to win a second medal based on their performance in the individual competition.


Evander Holyfield promoter Dan Duva announced that the boxer's heavyweight title defense against Mike Tyson will be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in October or November.

Under terms of the purse bid, Tyson would get 25 percent -- or $12.5 million -- with Holyfield getting the remaining $37.5 million. VTC But Duva said he has already offered Tyson $15 million and indicated he is willing to go higher.
