Maryland Department of Economic and Employment Development gave a loan of $150,000 from its Day Care Financing Program to a day-care center in Columbia. Nature's Way Children's Center, West Inc. at 5890 Cedar Lane will be able to care for 106 children.

Noland Co., a Virginia-based mechanical equipment distributor, opened a branch in the Pulaski Business Park at 9611 Pulaski Park Drive.

Lebson & Tompakov, an accounting firm in Baltimore, has moved to Pomona Square, 1700 Reisterstown Road, Suite 210, in Baltimore.

Kudos

Adams Sandler, an advertising and public relations firm in Baltimore and Rockville, won six awards in a competition sponsored by Healthcare Marketing Report. The agency also won a Silver Anvil award from the Public Relations Society of America for its program to market Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Charles P. McCormick Jr. received an honorary doctorate in business administration in food service management from Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, S.C. Mr. McCormick is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of McCormick & Co. Inc. in Hunt Valley.

Shale D. Stiller was named chairman of the University of Baltimore School of Law Advisory Committee. Mr. Stiller is chairman of the management committee of Frank, Bernstein, Conaway & Goldman in Baltimore.

Trade organizations

Independent Bankers Association of America appointed Michael Macielag to its Federal Legislation Committee. Mr. Macielag is president and chief executive officer of Chesapeake Bank and Trust Co. in Chestertown.

Hunt Valley Transportation Association elected Loren Jensen of EA Engineering chairman and Edwin Miller of PHH Corp. vice chairman. It also elected the following members to its board: Joseph Dollard of Westinghouse Electric Corp., Guy Hager of the Baltimore Regional Council of Governments, and William Scott of United Parcel Service.

Public service

Alan P. Kurland was named to the Howard County Board of Public Works. Mr. Kurland is president of Horizon Development Corp. in Beltsville.

Signet Bank gave nearly $67,000 in cash register receipts from Giant Food Inc.'s "Apples for the Students" program to Forest Park High School in West Baltimore and donated $2,500 to Family and Children's Services of Central Maryland for its Family Fun Walk June 30.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. gave $5,000 to Magic Me, a Baltimore-based international service and learning organization.

Michele Ryan was named chairman of the board of the Baltimore/Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce.

Raymond V. Bartlett was named to the board of directors of the Essex Community College Foundation. Mr. Bartlett is director of public relations for Martin Marietta Aero and Naval Systems in Middle River.

McCormick & Co. Inc. in Hunt Valley gave $5,000 to the Community Assistance Network in Dundalk.

Jeffrey A. Baeuerlein was named president-elect of the Harford County Exchange Club. Mr. Baeuerlein is a partner with the Baltimore accounting firm Katz, Abosch, Windesheim, Gershman & Freedman.

N. Mark Freedman was named to the board of directors of the Jewish Vocational Service. Mr. Freedman is a partner with the Baltimore accounting firm Katz, Abosch, Windesheim, Gershman & Freedman.

John Frederick Wiessner Foundation Inc. of Baltimore gave $7,000 to Howard County General Hospital to buy equipment for the hospital's Special Care Nursery.

The Visiting Nurse Association of Baltimore received $2,000 from Signet Bank and $1,500 from First National Bank to pay for education materials, and $5,000 from the William G. Baker Jr. Memorial Fund to cover renovation costs.

Charles E. Salisbury was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Children's Hospital and Center for Reconstructive Surgery Inc.

Vincent Bagli and Ronald M. Shapiro were named to the board of directors of the Bennett Institute for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
