Lady Baltimore today at Pimlico

Virginia Wright's Valay Maid, Maryland-bred 3-year-old filly queen of 1990, is the 117-pound high weight among the field of eight fillies and mares entered in today's 16th running of the $55,950 Lady Baltimore Handicap at Pimlico Race Course. The 1 1/16-mile event will be run on the turf.

Valay Maid, victor in Pimlico's Hilltop stakes on the turf last June, will be running on Lasix for the first time and will be ridden by Rick Wilson.

Several successful turf trainers will be represented by formidable challengers. Jonathan Sheppard, who has trained six steeplechase champions, will send out the entry of Augustin Stable's Be Exclusive and Franc Argument. The former, an Irish-bred mare, won the Honey Fox Stakes in Florida this winter, and the latter finished second in the Grade II Long Island Handicap in her U.S. debut last fall after spending most of her 4-year-old season in France.

Tom Skittington, who excels in New York with foreign-bred runners, will enter Marilyn Fazzio's Harbour Club, a turf winner this year.

Barclay Tagg, one of Maryland's top turf conditioners, will be represented by Last Chance Farm's Whip Cream, who is coming off an allowance turf victory.
