Gun seller pays damages

SAN FRANCISCO -- A 52-year-old Newark, Calif., woman won a $400,000 settlement from the gun store that sold the assault rifle used to kill her husband, her attorneys said yesterday.

The out-of-court settlement stemmed from the 1988 purchase of an assault weapon at Trader's Sports Inc., a San Leandro gun store, which allegedly sold an AK-47 rifle in a "straw buy."

A "straw buy" is the term used when one person buys a gun for someone else who does not meet federal standards governing the purchase of firearms.

A month later, Sharon Ellingsen's husband, Lawrence, 53, was killed by a man using the rifle.
