plans to erect a monument and fly a giant flag in honor of Sgt. Ronald M. Randazzo, the second Maryland soldier killed in Operation Desert Storm.

Community leaders will raise the 600-square-foot flag July 7 during a ceremony honoring the soldiers who fought in the PersianGulf war.

Samuel Kemp, the 70-year-old owner of Cedar Hill Florist shop, isdonating the flag, a 70-foot pole and a granite memorial to Logo Park, an island at Ritchie Highway and Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard.

"I wanted to do something for my community," said Kemp, who also raised a giant flag in front of Cedar Hill Florist and donated one to the Maryland Archives.

"When I put the flag in front of my place, I never realized they would have so many Americans who would come out and appreciate it."

The flag and memorial for Randazzo cost about $12,000.

Randazzo, a graduate of Glen Burnie High School, died Feb.20 in a skirmish with Iraqi forces near the Saudi-Iraqi border. The 24-year-old infantryman had planned to become an FBI agent.

His family used the $25,000 he had saved to go to college for a scholarshipfund in his name.
