Even the kitchen sink turned up Saturday as a donation.

The Loading Dock, a non-profit group that sells recycled building materials tolow-income families at reduced prices, accepted its first tax-deductible contributions in Howard County on Saturday.

Carpeting, plywood, counter tops and window shutters were among the items brought to the county landfill for recycling with the Baltimore-based group.

The organization hopes Saturday's haul will be the first of many in the county; the group will post a truck at the landfill between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. the first Saturday of each month.

"Instead of throwing out stuff that's still in good condition, people can give the supplies to us and we pass them along to families who need them," said donations coordinator Mindy DeAtley.

"We also receive a lot of brand new materials from contractors, manufacturers anddistributors that would otherwise go to waste."

DeAtley says Howard was the first county government to give Loading Dock permission totake up a collection at a landfill.

"We're currently negotiating with other counties, but Howard County was the most responsive and interested," she said.
