Carroll County lacrosse will be well represented this weekend in theNinth Annual Hall of Fame Lacrosse Classic at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

A pair of Carrollnatives have been selected to play in the men's NCAA Division III all-star game slated for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.


Gettysburg's Erik Johnson (Westminster) -- who recently was namedto the Division III NCAA All-American third team -- and Washington College grad Greg Rupert (Liberty) will play for the South team.

South Carroll senior Kyle Blough, who led the county in scoring this season with 33 goals, and Liberty senior Rachel Horne man (34 goals, 6 assists) will play in a pair of high school all-star games Saturday.


Horneman will be playing in the Maryland/Pennsylvania Women's HighSchool All-Star game scheduled for noon, while Blough will representthe South in the Men's North/South High School All-Star game at 1:30p.m.

The action will kick off tomorrow with a pair of old-timers scheduled for 7 and 8 p.m.

Westminster resident Butch Hilliard, a lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee and Cornell University grad, will playon the North side in the first game.

In other upcoming sports:

* The top two teams in the South Penn's West division, and perhaps the entire league, will face each other in a key Thursday night encounter when the Taney town Cardinals travel to division-leading Cashtownas the regular season approaches the half-way point.

Liberty gradScott Sharp -- 1-0 on the year with just three earned runs in two starts and 10-plus innings with eight strike outs -- will get the startfor the Cardinals. He must find a way to shut down a powerful Cashtown offense, which boasts six players in the top 20 among league leaders in hitting, including four hitting .400 or better.

The Cardinals' David Crouse was leading the league in hitting at the start of theweek with a .581 average and was second in runs batted in with 20. Starting time Thursday is 6:15.

Both Carroll teams will be traveling over the weekend, with the Cardinals playing two at Hanover Saturday and the Westminster Elks visiting New Oxford for a pair on Sunday. Both games are slated for 1 p.m.


* In the Carroll County UnlimitedBaseball League, Westminster Pool will play host to the Westminster Storm on Sunday in a 1:30 p.m. twin bill at Landon Burns Park.

First-place Mount Airy will play host to two with Frederick on 1:30 p.m.Sunday at South Carroll High School in Winfield, while North Carrollhas the weekend off.

* In American Legion Western Maryland District action, Mount Airy will visit Funkstown Saturday for a pair starting at 1 p.m., while Westminster will play host to Frederick in a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Westminster High School.

*The Carroll County Tennis Association will be having its first of three summer tournaments at the Westminster City Playground this weekend with men's and women's singles play.

The men's division will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, while the women's pairings were yet to be determined at press time. The finals will begin at 6 p.m. June 13.

TheCCTA is expanding this summer by offering adult and junior summer leagues as well as lessons. Last year, the association was responsible for tournaments only.
