At his retirement, he moved back to Greenville, where he had taught and been the school music director before he came to Baltimore.

The native of Due West, S.C., was a graduate of Erskine College. He earned both his master's degree and doctorate at Columbia.

He is survived by his wife, the former Kirk Hunter; and a daughter, Jane Hunter Magill of Greenville.
