Rose can't wear uniform in film

The producers of a made-for-TV movie entitled "The Babe Ruth Story" may have to rewrite one scene in which Pete Rose is supposed to portray Ty Cobb in a Detroit Tigers uniform.

"After doing some checking, there may be some problem with Pete Rose wearing a licensed Major League Baseball uniform," spokesman Rich Levin said.

NBC said Rose, banned from baseball, would appear in the movie as the Tigers' player-manager in the 1920s, meeting Ruth at a hotel and in a Tigers uniform on a baseball diamond.

Production on the movie is to begin Tuesday in Los Angeles. NBC plans to broadcast it in the fall.

* PADRES: Garry Templeton, who lost his starting shortstop jowhen San Diego acquired Tony Fernandez, was traded to the New York Mets for backup infielder Tim Teufel.

Templeton, unhappy with his status as a pinch hitter and seldom-used utility player, wanted to be traded to a team that would use him.

"Before I agreed to the trade, they [Mets] said they were going to let me play," Templeton said. "Here, they weren't going to let me play."
