Marylander sets junior high jump mark

Arizona's Tanya Hughes, a Maryland native, set a U.S. junior record in the women's high jump at the NCAA Track and Field Championships yesterday at the University of Oregon.

Hughes, a 19-year-old freshman from Lexington Park in St. Mary's County, broke the national junior record of 6 feet, 2 3/4 inches she had shared with Lisa Berhagen by winning at 6-4 1/4 and matched the meet record set by Katrena Johnson, also of Arizona, in 1985.

Texas' Patrik Boden became the first three-time winner of the men's javelin in 41 years.

The producers of a made-for-TV movie titled "The Babe Ruth " Story" may have to rewrite one scene in which Pete Rose, banned from baseball, is supposed to portray Ty Cobb in a Detroit Tigers uniform.

"After doing some checking, there may be some problem with Pete Rose wearing a licensed Major League Baseball uniform," spokesman Rich Levin said.

Auto racing

Although a fan's tape recorder caught Mario Andretti's pit crew urging him to create a caution period so his son, in second place, could gain on eventual winner Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears, the U.S. Auto Club doesn't plan to reopen its investigation.

Mears took the lead for good on the 188th lap of the 200-lap race and was pulling away when Andretti's car forced the caution period by stopping.

Michael Andretti was able to pull closer to Mears during the yellow light but was unable to pass him when the green light came on and lost the race by 3.1 seconds.

College football

Ty Detmer, Brigham Young's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, has made his first appearance on a professional football card -- much to his consternation.

The Pro Set card company annually issues a card featuring the previous year's Heisman Trophy winner as part of its NFL set. But most Heisman Trophy winners turn pro. Detmer has another season in the collegiate ranks, and appearing in the commercial set, making money for a profit-making venture, could be construed as a violation of NCAA rules.

Baseball becomes a medal sport at the Barcelona Games in 1992. But the International Baseball Association, composed of amateur groups, spent years lobbying for Olympic status and is unlikely to give up control.
