Players named for 10th Crown game

With support from Gov. William Donald Schaefer, the Orioles the Oriole Advocates and Crown Central Petroleum, the 10th annual Crown All-Star Game is set for June 30 at Memorial Stadium.

Featuring 30 outstanding high school seniors from the state, split TTC into North and South all-star squads, the Crown game will follow a 2 p.m. game between the Orioles and the Boston Red Sox.

The rosters were announced yesterday by Mount St. Joseph coach Dave Norton, president of the state coaches association.

The North squad is led by Calvert Hall catcher Ken Konopacki, The Evening Sun All-Metro Player of the Year. The South team boasts All-Metro first-teamers Charlie Buckheit and Craig Everett from Northeast-AA, the state's unbeaten Class 2A champion.

Twenty players from the two squads will be named to Team Maryland, set to play in the Sun Belt Classic at Oklahoma State University June 19-22.

"This is a real thrill to be playing in the Crown game," said All-Metro outfielder Ken Batten, who batted .600 to lead C. Milton Wright to an 18-3 record this spring.

"I have All-Metro papers from my first three years of high school under my bed at home," he said. "It was one of my goals, to be All-Metro and play in this game this year. It's good for Maryland and a honor for me to be involved."
