TEACHER IS CHALLENGED

WESTMINSTER -- Carroll Community College's new instructor of health and life fitness and coordinatorof intramurals is completing her first semester of what she calls "an intellectual maze of challenges."

Delores Coble, who joined the faculty this spring, has a variety of responsibilities. One priority is making the students and community as a whole aware of the facilities available to them at CCC.

She began her duties by organizing health and life fitness classes for the instructional program, making an inventory of athletic equipment, planning a budget and refurbishingthe South Center Street gymnasium.

By next fall she hopes to organize student club members to form the nucleus of a student intramuralprogram, built around student interest.

"These intramural activities are usually an outgrowth of life fitness classes," she said. "They don't require any specific talent or prowess, they're just for fun."

Coble also would like to see the development of a wellness room at CCC in which students, faculty and staff would be tested to determine fitness levels of individuals.

Those interested in a fitness program now must go the Catonsville campus for testing.

Life fitness classes are taught at South Center Street because of the availability of a gym.

"We are looking forward to the time when all of our life fitness equipment and activities are housed at the Washington Road campus," Coble said.

"I understand that a physical education building is in the college's 10-year master plan, but just when they break ground is indeterminable at this point in time."

Prior to coming to CCC, Coble was employed with the Department of Defense at Fort Meade in the Job Information Center.

After graduating from SlipperyRock University in Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in health education, Coble earned a master's in physical education from Ithaca College in New York.

She taught at Donegal High School in Pennsylvania and at the Academy of the Holy Names in Silver Spring, and in thehealth and physical education department at Towson State University.

Because of incorrectly provided information, the name of a Western Maryland College student inducted into Phi Sigma Iota, the international foreign language honorary society, was misspelled last Sunday. Dana M. Robertson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Fangmeyer of Westminster, was one of nine undergraduates inducted into the WMC Beta Alpha Chapter.
