Schultz's 67 leads 4 Kemper qualifiers

THE BALTIMORE SUN

LAYTONSVILLE -- Dirk Schultz of Hagerstown carded seven front-nine (his last nine) birdies and finished 30-3767 at Montgomery Country Club to lead four qualifiers into next week's Kemper Open.

From a starting field of 186, Schultz, an apprentice professional at Yingling's Golf Center, was followed by amateurs Richard Holland of Columbia Country Club, 68, and Trip Shreves of Congressional Country Club, 69, and Mike Barillo, an assistant pro at Congressional Country Club, 69.

It took a five-way playoff to sort out the two qualifiers and two alternates. Shreves and Barillo birdied the 526-yard first hole, and Ricky Touma of Norbeck Country Club and John Reynolds of East Williston, N.Y., claimed the two alternate positions by going par-birdie and par-par, respectively. Joe Greenawalt of Northwest Park was the playoff loser.
