KIM SHERIDAN
Archbishop Spalding
Softball
For a third year in a row, this standout junior windmiller pitched the Cavaliers to the Baltimore Catholic League Tournament Title. Sheridan (14-1) overpowered the Institute of Notre Dame on a two-hitter by 11-0 in the final on Thursday at McDonogh School.
Sheridan struck out nine batters and walked only onein the clincher.
Two days before, the Cavaliers' flame-thrower stopped Seton Keough, 5-0, on a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts. A walk inthe sixth inning prevented Sheridan from posting a perfect game.
Sheridan's final stats were awesome: 180 strikeouts and only seven walks in 96 innings, just 34 hits and only two earned runs for a microscopic 0.15 ERA.
"Kim just had an absolutely outstanding season for us again," said first-year head coach Jim Nemeth who led the Cavs to an overall 18-1 record.
BOYS LACROSSE
ANDY MOCARSKY
North County
Mocarsky was pretty much the lone bright spot in North County's 13-4 loss to unbeaten Dulaney (12-0, 36 in a row over three years) of Baltimore County in the state 4A-3A boys lacrosse championship Saturday at UMBC.
The Knights' sophomore attackman scored two of the four goals to go with two more he had last Tuesday in a 7-6 upset of Annapolis in the state semis at Annapolis.
North County finished its season at 15-2 under veteran coach Paul Shea.
GIRLS LACROSSE
SONYA MUHLY
Severna Park
Muhly's spectacular play in the cage enabled the Falcons (14-1) to reel off a fifth consecutive state 4A-3A championship in girls lacrosse and record eighth in 11 years since thesport began in Anne Arundel County.
Saturday's 9-5 state title-clincher over county foe Chesapeake (14-1) featured 15 saves by Muhly, who drew high praise from losing coach Jim Buchan.
"Seems like every time we needed a goal to draw closer, she made a big save to stop us," said Buchan. "Muhly played a fantastic game and their team and coaching staff deserves a lot of credit."
In the regular-season meeting between the two teams, Chesapeake emerged a 17-16 victor in overtime, so quite obviously Muhly was spectacular the second time around, giving up only five goals.
Last Tuesday, Muhly rejected eight shots in a 14-6 triumph over Dulaney of Baltimore County in the state semis.
BASEBALL
JIMMY SIMMS
Old Mill
Simms bounced back from last Monday's disappointment, the completion of a suspended game withNortheast, to pitch the Patriots (15-6) into yesterday's Class 4A Region IV championship at Arundel with a 6-2 win over Severna Park (13-6) in still another suspended game.
Last Monday, Simms and the Pats needed only three outs to deal Class 2A powerhouse Northeast (21-0)its first loss, 6-5, in the completion of a game suspended in the 13th inning back on April 19.
Simms got the first two outs in the bottom of the 13th only to give up a single and error on the play to put the runner Chad O'Brien on second, an intentional walk to Donnie Shump, and a two-run, two-bagger to Russ Curry for a 7-6 loss to the Eagles.
Simms put that aside in taking the mound Friday afternoon against Severna Park in the Region IV semis, and had a 4-2 lead on a four-hitter through three innings when lightning suspended play.
On Saturday, Simms responded to the pressure after giving up two singlesin the top of the fourth with one out -- the first inning upon resumption of play -- by getting the next two hitters. The senior lefty didn't give up another hit the rest of the way to post his seventh win against two losses.
His teammates put two more runs on the board in the fifth to give Simms a comfortable margin and the lefty mowed down the Falcons in rapid fashion.
BOYS TRACK
ALPHONSO GENERETTE
Glen Burnie
Generette posted a county best time of 10.4 seconds inthe 100-meter -- Saturday at Annapolis High to win the Class 4A Region IV championship to go with his 200 gold medal.
The two first-place finishes proved to be an encore of his county meet performance the week before.
The 10.4 in the 100 topped his county-winning effort of 10.9, but his 200-winning time of 23.8 in the regional was not as good as his county-meet-winning mark of 22 seconds flat. The 22.0 is a county best this season.
Glen Burnie grabbed fifth place in the boys regional won by Old Mill (120 points) with 58 points.
GIRLS TRACK
RAINA DOMNEYS
Old Mill
Domneys was the lone individual winner for the Patriot girls in the Region IV meet Saturday at Annapolis and that lifted Coach Ron Evans' squad to a 113 to 112.5 championship over Meade.
In taking two gold medals in the 100-meter hurdlesand the triple jump and finishing third in the long jump, Domneys' points lifted the Pats over the Mustangs by the slimmest of margins.
With a triple jump of 34 feet, 11 inches in the regional, Domneys duplicated her county title, which was even better the week before at 35-2. She took the 100 hurdles, an event she finished third in the county meet (15.7 seconds), in 15.5 to cop the regional.
Her long jump of 16-3 1/4 for third place was a personal best.
