CHICAGO -- With his second NBA Most Valuable Player trophy on the table in front of him, Michael Jordan spoke yesterday of not savoring the award until the Chicago Bulls achieve the ultimate.

"The MVP is great, but I will not truly enjoy it until we get the championship," said Jordan, a landslide winner over second-place Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers. "I'm envious of the Celtics, the Pistons and Lakers. They've won. That's what's driving me."

Jordan's motivation helped him to perhaps his best pro season. He averaged 31.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.7 steals while playing less and taking fewer shots than his previous five seasons.

"We knew his minutes and scoring average would go down to save him for the crucial times of the game and season," said coach Phil Jackson, whose Bulls take a 1-0 series lead into tonight's game with Detroit. "There was a lot of pressure on him early when he wasn't scoring a lot, but he stuck through it and now it's paying off."
