CURRENT volunteer needs and news:

United Way offers a list of hundreds of summer volunteer opportunities for youths ages 12-21 throughout the area who are needed to work with disabled children, visit patients, tutor, conduct field trips and museum tours plus more. Call 659-0050, the volunteer referral line.

Arthritis Foundation, Maryland Chapter celebrates May as National Arthritis Month and welcomes volunteers to assist in many areas of the chapter's work. Also, those who suffer with arthritis are urged to contact the chapter's headquarters at 3 Lan Lea Drive in Lutherville (561-8090) for the many services offered.

Baltimore County's SAVE Program wants retired adults to share their knowledge and skills to help fellow county residents. It's all part of the Senior Adult Volunteer Employment program, which puts seniors in volunteer positions within Baltimore County government. For details call Bea Newman at 887-3219.

American Red Cross, Chesapeake and Potomac Regional Blood Services needs volunteer drivers to transport blood to hospital blood banks. For details call 764-4602.

Western Maryland College is offering a new award to honor student volunteerism named for two WMC educators, Earl L. Griswold, professor emeritus of sociology and Ira G. Zepp Jr., professor of religious studies. Both are strong supporters of the idea that WMC students can contribute to society long before they receive their diplomas. Baltimore Association for Retarded Citizens asks for volunteers as tutors, advocates or friends to people with developmental disability. Call 323-5600.

Stella Maris, a division of the Cardinal Shehan Center, wants volunteers for programs and activities, nursing, rehabilitative services and personnel. Call 252-4500, Ext. 254.

Baltimore City Commission on Aging and Retirement Education wants volunteers to advocate on behalf of Baltimore City nursing home residents. Call 396-3144.

Home team of Pikesville Senior Center wants volunteers to help handicapped or homebound older people remain independent in the community. Call Janet Ben-Natan, 887-1245.
