Tickets are still available for the first Northeast High School Senior Sports Award Banquet, set for 5:30 p.m. May 31 in the school cafeteria.
The banquet, sponsored by the Northeast Athletic Boosters Association, will honor athletes from the Class of '91 and all members of championship and all-county teams at the school.
Most-valuable player awards will be presented in senior soccer, wrestling and boys lacrosse. Unsung hero awards will be presented in volleyball, football, boys and girls basketball and softball.
Two special awards will be presented. The John Groom Courage Award will goto a senior boy and girl who "through their character and convictionexcel in those intangible attributes of sacrifice, fortitude and intrepidity."
The award was established by the Groom family in memoryof their son, an accomplished football and lacrosse athlete who diedin 1972 from an injury received in a lacrosse game.
The Ed HeaphyTrophy, awarded to a senior boy and girl for athletic and scholasticachievement, is given by Heaphy's family to honor the memory of the founder and first president of the Northeast Athletic Boosters.
Following dinner, catered by Kentucky Fried Chicken, Adam Vernon, football athlete and scholar will make a brief speech about what it's likecombining the two disciplines. WMAR television sportscaster Keith Mills will be the guest speaker.
Tickets are $6 each and can be purchased from the school's bookkeeper.

Richard Guach, chief of the county Department of Zoning Enforcement, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Greater Pasadena Council, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Eastern District Police Station on Mountain Road.
Guach will present information concerning actions to improve zoning enforcement in the Pasadena area.

Serve the red, white and blue and get in free too at Downs or Quiet Waters parks in Annapolis tomorrow as the county Department of Recreation and Parks celebrates Armed Forces Appreciation Day.
Both parks are waiving the usual parking fee tomorrow to say thanks for a job well done. The offer isn't open only to active duty personnel but is extended to retired, Guard and Reserve members too. Just show your military identification at the gate and a day of fun and relaxation is yours.

Eighth-graders at St. Jane Frances School will be the special guests at the lastHome School Association meeting of the year. The meeting will take place at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school hall.
In addition to honoring the Class of '91 and members' families, HSA officers will be installed and the school band will perform.
The competitors for the big tortoise race at St. Jane next Thursday are anxiously awaiting post time.
Trainers are grooming their amphibian hopefuls, pamperingthem with raw ground beef and fresh fruits in anticipation of the contest. After all, turtles are not known for their speed, so a little TLC couldn't hurt.
Elimination heats will take place on the schoolparking lot starting at 9:50 a.m. Homeroom winners will compete at recess time to determine who will go on to the 12:30 p.m. grand prize race. The rain date is June 5.

A brother and sister team from Riviera Beach recently captured top awards in the Smokey the Bear Essay Contest sponsored by Downs Park.
Eight-year-old Andy Sleight won first place in the ages 6 to 9 category. Big sister Brandy Sleight won first prize in the age 10 to 13 category.
Ranger Bob Hicks reported that the Slieght children were awarded Smokey the Bear achievement certificate, a collection of wall posters and a 1991 parking permit.

Downs Park is offering a water safety program at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Vick McCallum, recreation specialist from the state Department of Natural Resources, will present a video and lecture, Drowning Is No Accident.
Theprogram is part of a public education campaign designed to help reduce the number of drownings from boating and swimming accidents along the waterways of Maryland.
Advance registration is required.
