Calvert Hall's Nugent gets Kelly Award

Calvert Hall midfielder Tony Nugent, one of the area's most dominant faceoff men, was selected the overall winner at last night's C. Markland Kelly Awards Banquet at Martin's Eudowood.

The Kelly Award is given annually to the Maryland Scholastic Association lacrosse player judged to be best by the Southern Lacrosse Officials Association.

Nugent helped Calvert Hall compile a 10-5 record this season, winning 84 percent of his faceoffs and leading the Cardinals in scoring.

"I'm surprised," said Nugent. "I really thought it would be Stan Ross [Boys' Latin] or Rob Chomo [St. Mary's]. They did a lot for their teams."

Calvert Hall coach Mike Thomas said Nugent played an important role for the Cardinals.

"Tony possesses all the characteristics of a complete lacrosse player," Thomas said. "He takes great pride in his command of both ends of the field."

Nugent was also chosen the MSA A Conference's top player.

Awards were also given to the top players in the MSA's other three conferences: BB Conference, Spencer Rice (McDonogh); B Conference, Albert Tyler (Poly); and C Conference, Sean Green (Forest Park).
