David Alan Miller, the 32-year-old associate conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has withdrawn his candidacy for the directorship of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Instead, he will assume control of the Albany (N.Y.) Symphony, beginning with the 1992 season.

Miller scored impressively with the ASO in his concert presented at Maryland Hall last October. He drew a remarkably full sound from the orchestra in a Dvorak "New World Symphony," notable for its breadth and solidity.

A former conductor of the New York City Ballet Company Orchestra, Miller also produced a reading of Borodin's "Polovtzian Dances" with the local orchestra.

Miller would have undoubtedlycommanded much attention from the search committee, which is seekinga conductor to assume control of the ASO this year.

His withdrawal leaves five candidates for the post, including Karen Deal, the orchestra's resident conductor and music adviser, who will conduct her concert audition for the post Saturday night at Maryland Hall.
