A Connecticut man was killed and his brother seriously injured last night when a car crashed into them as they changed a flat tire along Interstate 95 near College Park.

State Police said Lawrence Ohmes, 25, and his brother, Scott, 18, both of Weston, Conn., were changing the left rear tire of their 1991 Dodge Caravan on the shoulder around 9:40 p.m. when a northbound 1983 Nissan driven by Robin Spittle, 33, of Rockville, left the roadway and crashed into them, crushing them against their vehicle.

Police said the parents of the two men were standing near the rear of the disabled vehicle and witnessed the accident.

Police said the van was parked well off the highway at the time of the crash.

The brothers and Spittle were taken to Prince George's General Hospital in Cheverly, where Lawrence Ohmes died about an hour later of massive internal injuries.

Scott Ohmes was admitted in serious condition. Spittle was slightly injured and held for observation, police said.

Police said there was evidence that the use of alcohol contributed to the collision.

Multiple traffic charges, including driving while intoxicated, were pending against Spittle.
