A county police officer and volunteer firefighter rescued a Shady Side man Monday evening who was believed trying to drown himself in theChesapeake Bay.
Police say the 24-year-old man was in water about400 yards from shore for about 30 minutes before being pulled aboarda small rowboat.
A police report says that Officer Bryan Riddle and Firefighter Michael Tyler decided to go in after the man after they saw him go under water briefly.
It took the two rescuers 15 minutes to reach the man, who was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Police said the victim told police that he was having financial problems and wanted to take his own life.
The report says the man was "very intoxicated," having consumed a large quantity of Old Granddad whiskey.
MAN, 78, KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
A 78-year-old Silver Spring man was killed Monday afternoon when the car he was driving went off the road and overturned after hitting a tree in Davidsonville.
State police in Annapolis said Herbert H. Robinson was pro
nounced dead atthe scene.
"Witnesses say he drifted to the right," said Sgt. Kevin Lambert. "He went onto the shoulder, through the grass, hit a treeand overturned."
Lambert said police are hoping an autopsy will help them determine why Robinson, the only occupant in the car, apparently lost control.
