Coppin signs N.J. teammates Area notebook


Coppin State has received national letters of intent from two basketball players who were teammates at Woodrow Wilson High in Camden, N.J. Sidney Goodman, 6 feet 3, can play both guard positions, and 6-6 Steven Rogers will be tried at both forward spots.

Rogers averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds and Goodman 17 points and five assists as Woodrow Wilson went to the New Jersey state final. Both will be eligible to play as freshmen.

* The Essex Community College 4 X 400-meter relay team of Tina Diamond (55.7), Suzanne Lindsay (57.7), Koren Feser (64.5) and Amy Woods (62.9) set a school record for the event at the recent Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

* Chris Colbeck (Calvert Hall) and Colleen Anderson (McDonogh) were named the top male and female senior student-athletes Monday at the annual Loyola College Athletic Awards Banquet, held at the school's McGuire Hall.

Colbeck, who on Saturday became the fifth player in Loyola lacrosse history to score 100 career goals, received the John R. Mohler Trophy as the male senior student-athlete of the year. Anderson, the top scorer for both the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams, earned the Ernest Lagna Award honoring the top female senior senior-athlete. She is one of two Loyola athletes nominated for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Sean Smith (Calvert Hall) of the men's lacrosse team won the Unsung Hero Award.
