With the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III season all but completed and Division I teams about to close out their schedules, the focus in college lacrosse is turning to postseason tournaments.
The eight-team Division III field will be chosen Sunday, and 12-team Division I tournament participants will be selected May 12.
Salisbury State (13-0), ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll, undoubtedly will be the top Division III seed. Hobart, which has struggled to a 4-6 record this season, will try to win a
12th consecutive title. Other possibilities are Nazareth (10-1), Ohio Wesleyan (10-3), Gettysburg (12-1), Washington & Lee (10-3), Rochester Tech (7-4), Hartwick (9-4), Wooster (12-2), Ithaca (8-2) and Alfred (13-3).
In Division I, the picture still is cloudy. North Carolina (12-0), ranked No. 1 in The Sun poll, and Brown (12-0), ranked No. 2,
probably will get two of the four first-round byes. The Tar Heels complete their season against Pennsylvania (5-6) on May 11, and Brown finishes Saturday against Cornell (8-4).
Other teams that might get first-round byes include: No. 3 Maryland (8-3), which finishes against Maryland Baltimore County (7-6) on Saturday; No. 4 Princeton (10-2), which plays Dartmouth on Saturday and Hofstra (6-5) on May 11; No. 5 Virginia (9-3), which ends against Roanoke (8-5) tonight; and No. 7 Syracuse (9-2), the defending champion, which plays at No. 10 Massachusetts (8-2) Saturday and at Adelphi on March 11.
One berth goes to the West champion, likely Michigan State (6-4).
Other possibilities for the Division I tournament are No. 6 Johns Hopkins (6-3), No. 8. Loyola (7-3), Towson State (8-2), Massachusetts, Cornell, Army (9-3), Penn State (8-4) and Duke (7-5).
The National Junior College Athletic Association tournament will be May 10-12 at Catonsville Community College. Essex CC (14-0) is top-ranked among JuCo teams.
