A general plan for downtown growth to be released in June will recommend redeveloping The Block, a historic if notorious clump of bars, sex showcases and erotic bookstores along East Baltimore Street.

Of 1,179 Evening Sun readers and other callers to SUNDIAL on Friday, 664, or 56 percent, believe that The Block should be eliminated, and 515, or 43 percent, think it should not be eliminated.

Of 1,152 callers, 511, or 44 percent, believe that dispersing Block businesses would move related problems to another area, and 641, or 55 percent, believe that dispersal would not move problems elsewhere.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.
