Around the league in 80 seconds

THE BALTIMORE SUN

* Talk about progress. The White Sox are selling seats from the old Comiskey Park through computerized TicketMaster outlets. The seats sell for $250, and all proceeds go to the White Sox charities. This is all well and good, but how do they get them to come out of that little machine?

* Expos OF David Martinez had 4 hits in an April 21 game, tying his career high. He has had 4 hits in a game 4 times -- twice as a member of the Cubs and twice as a member of the Expos -- but all 4 of those games have been at Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

* When Orioles OF Dwight Evans threw out White Sox C Ron Karkovice at second base Wednesday, he regained sole possession of second place on the all-time outfield assist list at 152. Jesse Barfield had pulled abreast of Evans with his 151st assist Monday night. Dave Winfield is the all-time leader at 156. Evans got his 153rd on Friday.

* When Storm Davis shut out the Indians Tuesday, it was his first shutout since Aug. 30, 1985, when he shut out the Mariners as a member of the Orioles.

* White Sox catcher Carlton Fisk after the temperature dropped to 40 degrees for a game last weekend: "I didn't think I should've been asked to catch when the temperature was below my age."

* Orioles DH Sam Horn struck out 19 times in his first 38 plate appearances, prompting someone to ask why he strikes out so much. Stupid question. "Because I miss the ball," he said.
