COUNTY TREE-PLANTINGS

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Gov. William Donald Schaefer has designated April as "Tree-mendous Earth Month" and is asking all citizens to help plant 1 million trees this year.

Volunteers from Anne Arundel County, including the Boy Scouts, the Coast Guard and the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Riviera Beach, are among the groups helping with the project. But more volunteers are needed.

In one effort, the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corp. of New Jersey has brought to the county its 1-year-old nationwide Rooting forAmerica -- The Linde Community Tree-Planting Program.

Linde's trees are American liberty elms, related to the American elms that linedstreets throughout the nation until they were largely wiped out by Dutch elm disease. These new elms are impervious to the disease.

Linde is making a $2,500 cash donation to the Anne Arundel Beautification Program to purchase the trees.
