Activities/hobbies: The pupils participate in the Middle School Community Services program, a requirement at Severn School. One Fridaya month they are bused to the greenhouse at Providence Center in Arnold or to Baldwin Industries in Severna Park to help developmentally disabled people.

Organization's comments: Providence Center, a non-profit organization, offers year-round, tuition-free activity centers, vocational training, sheltered employment, job development and placement services for approximately 380 county adults with developmental disabilities. Providence Center has a summer youth volunteer program. Information: 268-8835.

"Our goals are to have an intergenerational program," said Jean Patterson, volunteer coordinator. "We believethat young people have a lot to offer. They are doing a wonderful job working with the clients while learning job skills and more about developmentally disabled people. We are very proud of them and appreciate their services."

Volunteers comments: "It's really great to know the people. They can't help what's wrong with them," Ryan Humphreysaid. "It means a lot. It makes you realize what you have and othersdon't. And it makes you feel good to help the community," Steven Jones said. "Makes you realize what terrible needs these people have, and it makes you feel good helping them," Dale Shields said.
